Ar. Akshaya Balakrishnan

Architect | Heritage Conservation Specialist | Educator

Akshaya Balakrishnan is a Heritage Conservation Architect deeply committed to preserving the cultural, architectural, and spiritual legacies embedded within our built environments. Her work is guided by an enduring passion for People, Place, and their Practices, where every project becomes an exploration of how tradition and sustainability can coexist in contemporary contexts.

Her architectural philosophy stems from a desire to rediscover memories of the past and reinterpret them through spaces that narrate stories of community, craftsmanship, and continuity. Akshaya’s practice bridges the wisdom of vernacular techniques with the demands of modern living — emphasizing mud construction, traditional homes, and temple conservation as key pathways toward ecological and cultural sustainability.

Trained in Mud Construction at Auroville and in Cost-Effective and Indigenous Building Systems at COSTFORD, she integrates practical field knowledge with scholarly understanding to design and restore structures that resonate with place and purpose. Her experience includes supervising and documenting over 75 heritage sites and structures across Tamil Nadu, contributing to the preservation of temples, traditional settlements, and significant cultural landmarks.

Currently serving as an Assistant Professor at MSAJAA, Chennai, she teaches and mentors postgraduate students in Architectural Conservation, nurturing the next generation of architects to approach heritage with sensitivity, innovation, and responsibility.

Akshaya continues to engage in projects that balance sustainability, tradition, and community participation, particularly in temple restoration and conservation efforts. Her work stands as a testimony to the belief that architecture is not merely about building, but about belonging — creating environments that sustain both culture and climate.
